What You Should Know About Railroad Worker AML Claims in Chicago

by | Jul 11, 2023 | Law

During the 2022 meeting of the American Society of Hematology, a strong focus was placed on blood cancer conditions such as acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Researchers from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society were featured speakers at the conference, and a few promising case studies were presented. Treatment of severe AML currently consists of inpatient chemotherapy that is difficult to tolerate, but there are hopes for future outpatient therapies that are easier on patients.

AML starts as a hematological condition with a high potential of turning into a more severe bone marrow cancer. The disease is characterized by the uncontrolled production of mutated white blood cells that can crowd out healthy cells and lead to many complications, including anemia, infections, and internal bleeding.

This condition is one of many associated with toxic environmental exposure to benzene; in fact, railroad worker AML is a valid anecdotal classification of this disease. You don’t have to be directly exposed to benzene in gasoline or diesel form for AML to generate; in fact, most railroad worker AML cases feature exhaust and fume inhalation of benzene molecules. Moreover, exposure to mixtures of coal tar and creosote, which are often used in railway building and track maintenance, has also been found to be an AML catalyst.

When AML starts setting in, the symptoms are very similar to those of various lymphomas. Once the disease becomes more chronic, an almost unmistakable symptom involves pain that feels as if it emanates directly from the bones.
